About National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)

The National Open University of Nigeria, popularly known as NOUN is a government owned Open and Distance Learning Institution. It is the first of its kind in West Africa and it is recognized as the largest tertiary institution in Nigeria based on student numbers. 1983 marked a major turning point in the history of Open Distance Education (ODE) in Nigeria, the vision of Nigeria to provide education to all received a major boost. This was the year the Open University Act which subsisted in the law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1980) Volume XVII consequently became effected. The actual date of establishment being July 22nd, 1983, this and several other events leading to it became the bane for the establishment of the Open University. The establishment of the National Open University of Nigeria is seen as the springboard for distance learning in the country. After initial set up, the institution was suspended in 1984 by the then government but was reinstituted in 2001 by the government of the then Head of State, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

The pioneer student enrollment of the institution stood at 32,400 which rose to 57,759 students in 2011. Under the leadership of Prof Vincent Tenebe, the then Vice Chancellor, the institution operated from its administrative headquarters located at Victoria Island, Lagos. In 2016, the institutions operations were moved  to its permanent site located in Jabi, Abuja, this was under the administration of the present vice chancellor, Prof Abdalla Uba Adamu. Presently, the institutions prides itself in over 75 study centers scattered all over the country, it offers 50 programmes and 750 courses.

Due to its Open Distance Learning nature, NOUN does not offer lectures to students in classrooms, except in some specific study centers, like the study center in Lagos which offers lectures to law students. The institution however provides study materials to undergraduate students after payment of tuition fees and then conducts examinations on specific dates.

There are really no special requirements for acceptance of students into the institution, students are accepted from all works of life. All they need is a proof that they are capable to study at the level of the institution, probably providing a West African Certificate Examination result or some other result from a national diploma. A major reason for the continual increased growth of the studentship of the institution lies in the fact that the mode of study is quite appealing as it does not require sitting within the four walls of the classroom most of the time, making the learning quite flexible as students use materials and online videos as major tools for learning. The Act of Parliament which established the school prescribes that there should be no form of unions created by either staff or students. This measure has helped to curtail the challenge of strikes or other forms of delays to the academic process whatsoever.

Facilities provided by the institution include and e-library which is operational at the Victoria Island headquarters. This is open to students as long as they can provide a valid student identification card. The institution also has a radio station, 105.9 NOUN FM which offers opportunity for mass communication students to intern; NOUN also provides a platform known as e-courseware, which provides access to educational materials to students via the NOUN e-Courseware Free Download. Materials can be downloaded at no charge and they are strictly for educational purposes.

National Open University School Fees

The institution’s authorities recently published that there has been an increase in the fees charged by the institution. The reason for the increment is stated as basically to fund the maintenance of the NOUN iLearn e-facilitation platform. The increment across board is about #7,500.00 only, which is viewed as minimal in relation to how much is required for the maintenance of the platform. The table below contains the different charges and the increments.
