The Impact of Educational Facilities on the Academic Performance of Students in Secondary Schools in Nigeria

STUDENTS EXPOSED TO ADEQUATE FACILITIES PERFORM BETTER THAN THOSE WITHOUT ADEQUATE FACILITIES

It is a general agreement that facilities help in adequate development of students. A well standardized school will have students with better performance compare to a low developed school. For an effective communication between the teaching and learning process in schools which might result in either a loss in their objectivity or a sense of numerous frustrations for the participants. While the effective provisions of facilities in our schools exist to facilitate and stimulate constructural programme, the building as well as facilities the teaching and learning process in a normal situation.

Ojelabi (1981) shows that sport from the fact that geographical location of any school situation is very important without the adequate required facilities, learning cannot take place conclusively though the atmosphere contributed to the ease learning. This is a fact in a situation which a school is geographically located in a fine environment but lack of the essential facilities which will affect the student’ performances compare to a well equipped school but have bad location. The provisions of facilities equally help to instigate the idea of self learning. The educational system will be structured to develop the practice of self learning in a standard school a student can walk into a technology, workshop and carryout the practical he wants to learn himself without waiting for a teacher.

Finally, with facilities and a smooth learning and teaching process, the educational assessment or evaluation will be attained after teaching has taken place. Facilities play a vital role in the evaluation of the pupils’ achievements.

THE NEED FOR ADEQUATE RESOURCES IN ORDER TO DEVELOP STUDENTS

Any outstanding educational facility is the product of an effective “team effort”. This can be regarded as the products of carefully planned co-ordinated activities of planners, educators and user.

The benefits of all these professionals who planned the educational facilities are well stated when Candill Invi (1954) wrote that countless decisions must be made by many people before school facilities are ready for use. The educational consultant of planners assume the major responsibility of deciding on the facilities to be used, they provided guidance, resource materials  and the planning information most especially in the principal of the school equipment. The principal of the school for instance come in accordance with education planner from all works of life and members of the parents of better facility so as to help attain the stated objectives of the curriculum. The principal who is the head, leader and also the co-ordinator of the school sees to the accomplishment of their aim and goals.

Another important factor is the teacher as a facility to a school programme. If unqualified teachers are recruited the whole purpose of teaching would be defeated, it means that the most important facility has not been adopted. This was supported by the fact that, the least teaching body to have is at least N.C.E. certificate.

Only people with the right skills and professional competence are to be employed as teachers which would help to solidify the educational background of the pupils. The teacher after being qualified should be well skilled in using the teaching facilities according to the stated objectives in the curriculum in order to achieve the outlined aims.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FACILITY PLANNING IN SCHOOLS

Facility planning helps to meet the needs of the society e.g. the number of students in the school, the type of curriculum, the number of classrooms needed and the proposed building. Facility planning allows the planner to assess the quality and quantity of required facility based on the size of the standard. If facility planning in schools are not well co-oriented, the educational outputs to be produced at the end of the day would turn out as failure since the educational needs and objectives of the society have not been achieved.

Proper planning equally affective the efficient utilization of available resources to achieve desired goals. The educational goals and objectives can not be achieved without a proper planning. It is agreed that, the environmental influence and size of the school must be made for the recommendation of the necessary facility.

Planning encourages one to determine the rate of deterioration, when facilities are provided and knowledge is not attached to that facility it would be a wasted effort but if teachers can effectively disseminate knowledge in attachment with the available facilities the learning will be conducive but, if not the teacher will not be able to impart knowledge.

In conclusion, ii can be noted that a closer working relationship between facility planners, school programmes, planners and citizens is essential for an effective school system and for initiating a new approach to our educational system. Much importance should be attached to facilities. Whaw D.D. (1993) emphasized the inevitable functions of facilities planning in our various schools.
