Cult Groups in Nigerian Universities – Recruitment and Initiation Processes

Cult Groups in Nigerian Universities – Recruitment and Initiation Processes

Cult Groups in Nigerian Universities – According to Ornadaio (2002: 2), the very first manifestation of the confraternity tradition in Nigerian Campuses occurred in 1952 when Prof. Wole Soyinka and Six other students formed the Pirates confraternity at the University of Ibandan. It was, according to Dr. Tanyi Tuli, one time National Capon “because of some social ills and conformist degradation which were exhibited not only by the students, but by the society at large, he also noted that the organization at that time, had idea that were “humanistic”.

Between 1952 and 1997, there have occurred abnormal genetic mutation, which brought into existence a plethora of secret organizations. Most of them have little or no similarities in ideas with the original concept developed by the seven in 1952. Egwu, (2004: 9) noted that the very first mutation occurred in the mid 70s when a member of the pirates, which until then, was still the only confraternity in existence was black spotted’ or expelled from the organization. One of the aggrieved members, who was later to become a provost on one of the nation’s colleges of education, decided in protest to form a parallel fraternity, which he dubbed the “Buccaneers”.

The Buccaneers have been close to the pirates in terms of original ideals except that it had to cope with serious credibility problems that gave rise to complex and a need for constant self-assertion, the Buccaneers were also to be known as the National Association of Sea-Lords, which was an answer to pirated National Association of Seadogs (Igodo, 2002:3).

Kanter (2004:4). Observed that after much struggle for power it now broke into further confraternity groups which included: Black Axe, Vikings, Red Beret, and Double (i.e. 2, 2) etc. As the groups continue to split, they lost their vision and their activities degenerated to unnecessary Carnage in our higher institutions.

In this study, attention will be focused on the some selected confraternity groups in Ebonyi State University such as Black Axe, Vikings, Double (2, 2).

In the main research, attempts will be made to examine the recruitment and initiation processes among the aforementioned cultist groups in Ebonyi State University.

   STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

According to Ibe (2003:33), statement of problem serves to elaborate on the information as contained in the situation implied in the topic or titles of the study.

Recruitment and initiation processes among cultist groups have specific procedures to be followed. After the brutality, prominent manifestation is being administered which involves alien material to the initiates. This can be inform of drinking of concoctions, blood oaths, the marking of tattoo on the body of the initiate by the initiator (i.e. the person who administers the oath) and the partaking of the initiate in a meditative strange spiritual rite and rituals which climax in his willful surrender of his ego and total consciousness to the spirit beings that enter and control him. The spirit new adherents. Thereafter, the initiate comes out of initiation in possession of secret signs, symbols and marks to be preserved and protect.

  OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

Ibe (2003: 33), viewed objective as stating the aims of the study by highlighting what the study wants to achieve.

Therefore, the objectives of this study include:

(i) To reveal the effects (negative) of recruitment and initiation on the academic performance of the students in higher institutions.

(ii)       To highlight the hazardous of recruitment and initiation into cultism.

  RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1)Does a new initiated and recruited member die during the process?

2)Does recruitment and initiation process among cultist groups affect the social life of every student on campus?

3)Does most of the initiated members of the cult groups come from average and wealthy families in the society?

4)Does recruitment and initiation of students in campus have any negative implications?

5)Does new members initiation done through blood Oath?

   SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

One important document findings upon which future will be based since the particular area that is focused is a vital part of the whole activities of cultism. The study is relevance in developing a theory of the secret organisation.

Practically, the present study provides insight into recruitment and initiation of notice who became aware of their mistakes when it is quite late.

  DELIMITATION/ SCOPE OF THE STUDY

This study was restricted to some cults in Ebonyi State University.

The Cultist groups are:

Black Axe

Vikings

Double (2, 2)

They were chosen because of their prominence and large followers they command in EBSU.

For a wide coverage of these groups, the study draw samples across the three satelite campuses of the University namely:

CAS        —          College of Agricultural Science

CHS       —          College of Health Sciences

Ishieke Campus

 DEFINITION OF OPERATIONAL TERMS

CULT:      According to this study, a cult is an assemblage of people who share unconventional ideas and belief and involved themselves, in eccentric conduct and manifestations mostly shrouded in the society (Igodo, 2002:1)

INITIATION: This is the action of starting something. It also means the action of initiating somebody or the process of being initiated into a group or an activity.

RECRUITMENT: According to this study, recruitment is the process of enlisting a new person into an organization, club etc. (Berger, 1986:12). Or initiating some groups of persons into cult activities which is not in line with school activities.

LITERATURE REVIEW

This chapter reviews the related literature to this work. It covers the general overview of secret cult in Nigerian higher institutions, its origin on campuses, the inner workings of the selected cultist groups, recruitment methods initiation of new members, and finally, the consequences of being a cult member.

OVERVIEW AND ORIGIN OF SECRET CULT IN NIGERIAN HIGHER INSTITUTIONS

It was with good intentions that seven young men formed the pirates confraternity in 1952 at the University College Ibandan. There seven young men were known as the “original Seven”. They include: Wole Soyinka (1952), Raph Okpara, Pius Okegbe, Frank Aigimoukhuede, Nathaniel Oyelola, Olumuyiwa, Awe and Ben Egbu Chalam (Igodo: 2002: 19). The confraternity was later transformed into the National Association of Seadogs (NAS) and was registered with the federal Ministry of Internal Affairs in 1980. it is still regarded in many quarters as the fountain head of Campus cultism in Nigeria tertiary institutions (Egwu, 2004:2) Egwu (Ibid), further explains that, when they started, they did not have the kind of organisation that now pervades in the Universities. They started as a confraternity. It is just a meeting of minds of those who thought the same way. Wole Soyinka was the captain because he was the one who initiated the move. They had three basic objectives when they started it.

(i)       They wanted to abolish convention: They did not want to do things just because it was the convention, they wanted to see if there was a reason for doing a particular thing in a particular way or if there was a better way of doing it. They did not want to follow convention blindly.

(ii)     They wanted to revive every body in the campus as regards strengthening the whole students (the weaker sex in particular) in knowing their rights as students, to fight any intimidation that may come their way.

(iii)   The third objective was in response to the Richard’s Constitution at that time that was discriminating and aimed at tribalizing the African’s politics etc. an election was held and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe was meant to be the premier of the Western Region. But he was denied that position because he was not from Yoruba.

In Soyinka (1972), the Buccaneers confraternity broke away from the pirates. The pirates were the only organisation in the institution and there was the desire of many students to be belong to it. For about twenty years, it was just the pirates and anyone whose life was inclined to that ideology wanted to join the organisation. In due course, the quest for power and ego became the major problem of these groups and this led to the proliferation of cult groups such as Buccaneers, Vikings, Black Axe, Eiye, Mafia, Black Beret, Black Brassier, Black Cat etc. As the groups continue to split, they lost their vision and their activities degenerated to unnecessary carnage in out higher institutions.

WHY DO STUDENTS JOIN CAMPUS SECRET CULTS?

Igodo (2002:6) explains Campus secret cults as organisations whose activities are not only exclusively kept away from the knowledge of others but such activities are carried at odd hours of the day, and they often clash with the accepted norms and values of every day life.

Egwu (2004:13), revealed some cult members intentions of joining the cult groups in our higher institutions. Those campuses secret cults provide social security for members. The specific arguments here include the followings:

(i)       That membership confers respect and recognition on those who join campus cults.

(ii)     That offending cult members on campus are likely be protected against sanctions among their colleagues, the university authority, and the government.

The second reason, is that membership is a means of influencing the decision making machinery in the various campuses.

The third reason is that cults provide avenues for financial assistance for instance, it is believed that part of the money extorted from non-members is used to assists members who are not financially good.

Finally, there are those who believe that some students join secret cults as an avenue for securing girl friends.

RECRUITMENT CONCEPT/ METHODS

According to Berger (1986:12), the term recruitment refers to a person who recently joined the armed forces or police and he is not yet trained (i.e. not experienced) or a person who has recently joined or may join an organisation, a company, a club etc. Methods of recruitment include:

(i)       Some are recruited through enticements; Students get financial support from the big members in the society.

(ii)     Some are recruited through brutality/ oppression.

 INITIATION OF NEW MEMBERS

Igodo (2002:1) outlined the processes of cult members initiations. This is the most important stage in cult activity. This involves the indoctrination, orientation and teaching of the ethos of cult as well as the rituals and rites, which the initiate is obliged to undergo. This is mostly conducted undercover. Igodo, (2002) noted that it is prominent manifestation the administering of alien materials to the initiated. This can be in the form of drinking concoctions, blood oaths strange spiritual rite and rituals which climax in his willful surrender of his ego and consciousness to the spirit being that enter and control him. The initiate comes out of initiation in possession of secret signs, symbols and marks to be preserved and protected.

The indoctrination and orientation which entrants receive which in most cases is product of hallucinations and hypothesis makes them to accept and to carry out actions that have no moral justification such as killing, arson and rape.

Thereafter, after the candidate’s have been through this stage, they are taken for a level of initiation, which takes the form of physical drilling and brutalizing. After, the initiate is told some of the members who are regarded as role models either on campus or in the larger society. (Berger 2001:6). They tell the initiate he is about to join a prestigious organization that would change his life for the better. He is told that he is about to move from being a boy to a man” and from being “Blind to being wise”.

This session could be best described as a revelation’s and according to (Igodo 2002). Discovers several people one have suspected are members of the cult. At intervals, different drilling team comes to ‘take you up”. This is cults colloquial phrase to beating you up”. Initiates are subjected to several experiences, threats, scams fear and many other subterfuges. (Igodo 2001:41 are used. In this drilling sessions initiates are subjected to countless rules to which they are not even aware. After this, if the intended initiate is found worthy, the initiate thumb is pierced with a blade and he is told to tough the blood to a sheet of paper. It is some kind of signature and signifies your acceptance of being a member of the brother hood”. This document is kept jealously and even when you are being let off the hook, you are told that it could be used against you if you decide to reveal what has been seen. After this, the following rules are laid bare before the new initiate:

(i)       You are asked if you really decide to join the fraternity.

(ii)     You are told the creed and made to rule it.

(iii)   You are subjected to questioning sessions where your ability o think quickly and logically is tested.

(iv)   You are made to a cocktail, i.e. a mix of several drinks, which may be used to test your “staying power”.

Finally, the initiate is asked to identify and after the initiate does this, the cycle of initiation is considered completed.

CONSEQUENCES OF BEING A CULT MEMBER

(i)       Contamination of deadly diseases through blood oath: During initiation, old members and new initiates normally take blood oath from the mixture of blood of new initiates. This can certainly spread HIV/AIDS; hepatitis B and other deadly diseases.

(ii)     Killing and destruction: one can be a victim of intra-cult clash. A member is prone to heinous crimes, violence and killings.

(iii)   You can destroy your future career if you are expelled from school.

   SOLUTIONS TO CULT PROBLEMS

(A)     The government: our government has to be responsible. Corruption starts from the top and pollute the bottom. Our government should take serious interest in education and fund the universities more. It is due to poverty that some female students take to prostitute in order to meet the financial demands of the school. The government should resuscitate facilities like scholarships, bursaries, so that these young people concentrate in their studies and will have no opportunity to include of in cultism.

(B)     Parents: Parents have a very big part to play inculcating morality in their children because cultists exists in secondary school, successful parenting requires courage and parent should be close to their children.

(C)     Church: The churches also have their role to play. They should organize programmes to sensitize children about the evils of cultism. They should also preach about cultism from the pulpit.

(D)    The university Authorities: The University authorities should desist from various abuses through various inconsistent policies which often lead students to think of protecting their interest with what ever means at their disposal including cult activities.

(E)     The student: Students too should note that it is hard work before pleasure and face their studies with all concentration, let them preoccupy themselves in religious activities or programmes such as Christian Association on Campus where they can grow spiritually, so that they will not succumb to peer pressure.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

According to Ibe (2003: 70), research design refers to the framework for controlling the collections, measurements, and analysis of data.

The research design is survey design. It is one in which a group of people are studied by collecting and analyzing data from only a few people or items considered to be the representative of the entire group. The survey approach involves the researcher obtaining the opinions of respondents from the study population through the use of questionnaire. Library sources was also used.

SCOPE/ AREA OF STUDY

Base on the research topic: recruitment and initiation processes among cultist groups, focusing on selected cult groups in Nigerian tertiary institutions, the scope area of this study is restricted to selected cult groups in Ebonyi State University. Looking at the recruitments and initiations processes among the selected cultist groups. The findings of this research will be used to understand the recruitment and initiation processes among the selected cultist groups in EBSU and other learning higher institutions worldwide.

 TARGET POPULATION

Orjih, (1999) defined population as all members of elements (human beings, animals, trees, objects) of a well-defined group. He also buttressed that population defined the limits within which the researcher, findings are acceptable.

Therefore, the population of the study was restricted to the number of cult groups in Ebonyi State University.

The study population consists of the following cult groups in EBSU:

  •    Black Axe
  •    Vikings
  •    Double (Brotherhood of Blood)
  •    Enyi/ Flayers
  •    Maffi
  •    Buccaneer
  •    Klinsmen
  •    Black Bra
  •    Queen of Jezebel
  •    Pirates etc.

SAMPLE AND SAMPLING DETERMINATION

This is a process through which a portion of a population is selected for the study (Orjih, 1999:83). The sampling techniques used in this study was probability sampling, which can be simple random sampling or stratified random sampling because, it allows 1150m for generalization to take place. Going by this, Black Axe, Vikings, Double (2, 2) were randomly selected in the group of other cult groups in EBSU. Such that our sample size in focus is on the three aforementioned cultist groups. Which can be mathematically expressed thus:

Black Axe       —   40

Vikings           —   48

Double (2, 2)  —   27

Total = 115 this is the number of people who questionnaires were administered to, which will serve as our sample size for this study.

  INSTRUMENT FOR DATA COLLECTION

Information were gathered from the three selected cult groups through the following means / methods

v   The Questionnaire/ Method: This helped to gather information from the students on the three campuses by preparing questions of limited number and distributing it within the selected cultist groups in the three campuses of Ebonyi State University. The questionnaires are structured and unstructured aimed to get the needed information for the analysis.

v   The interview method: This method was applied also, in an oral form that is face to face with the person in other to gather information for the project work.

  METHOD OF DATA ANALYSIS

The data generated for this work will be analyzed using both quantitative measures where the researcher will also apply percentage method in the data analysis and frequency for data’s collected

 PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA

 INTRODUCTION

The main focus of this as mentioned in chapter one is on the recruitment and initiation processes among cultist group with a focus on some selected cult group in Ebonyi State University. In this regard, this chapter contains the analysis and interpretation of the data collected from the field.

Furthermore, before the analysis of data collected through questionnaire in the form of research questions, it will be pertinent to have the descriptive analysis of the data collected.

THE INNER WORKING OF THE SELECTED CULTIST GROUPS

Like any other organisations, these cults are not haphazard in their organisation. They have constitutions, procedures for operations and initiation processes. There are expected norms which dictate cult member’s duties and responsibilities, cult-cult relations and cult-societal relations. They have their own hierarchies with titles.

v   BLACK AXE: Igodo (2002:8), observed that this cultist groups is also called Neo-Black movement of Africa. This confraternity uses Black beret.

Moreso, initiation ceremony as noted by (Igodo: 2002:9), is an elaborate occasion for both old and recruit members who are drawn from other institutions. It is the stiffest of all activities because it is the means of socializing new members into the cult activities.

That part, their made of securing new initiates varies. On initiation, the new member takes a cult name. The screening would have started a month earlier, during which recruitment of new members us under taken. Some may not scale through because of the rigors of the test so that only those who qualify after the test has been administered are considered recruited and who finally go for initiation.

v   VIKINGS: Philips (2001:4), observed that, the Vikings confraternity are sailors. The Vikings wear long robes like those of the European Vikings of old. Thus, their outfits are designed peculiarly to be unlike other cults for purpose of identification. The Vikings confraternity uses red as their colour. The Vikings initiation of new initiated, takes the form of drilling and selection. This is the major stage in the initiation of new members where stringent drillings, and harsh circumstances are employed, thus making impossible for many to scale through- some even due in the process!. Here, when one scales through, he becomes a member of the Vikings confraternity.

v   Double (2,2): Kanter (2003:48), noted that, the (2,2) confraternity is a large one. They initiate one by the using one to go the to a particular place, when you get to the said point of the first signal, it is mostly a whistle, which alerts the others that these are authentic emissaries. You hear a voice of command which orders you to stop!”. Whatever discussion you may have been having with the people you were coming along with immediately stops and they become distant and unfriendly. Slaps come from left, right and center. You are thoroughly brutalized. By this time, the candidate is afraid, really scared and not in a position to think or resist. Eventually, he is blind-folded or told to close his eyes and taken through series of physically demanding chores. You may now take the blood Oath and from that movement, you have been initiated.

DATA ANALYSIS

Answering Research Questions

The above questions were analysed through the use of table that is tabular format. The method employed in the test of hypothesis is the simple percentage statistical method.

QUESTION ONE:

Does a new Initiated and Recruited member die during the process?

 DECISION RULE:

Accept the question if the percentage of the positive responses (YES) is higher than the negative responses (NO) otherwise rejected the question.

With reference to table 2 above.

Positive        =    91.30%

Negative              =    8.69%

Therefore, positive responses are greater/ higher than negative responses.

Decision: Accept the question because, the positive (YES) response which is greater. Higher than the negative (NO) responses, indicate that new initiated and recruited members die during the process.

QUESTION TWO:

Does recruitment and initiation process among cultist groups affect the social life of every student on campus?

DECISION RULE:

Accept the question if the percentage of the positive (YES) responses is higher than the negative (NO) responses, otherwise reject the question.

With reference to table 3 in our data presentation.

Positive Responses     =    69.55%

Negative Responses   =    30.43%

Therefore, positive responses are greater/ higher than negative responses.

DECISION: Accept the questions because, the 69.55% positive (YES) responses shows that recruitment and initiation process among cultist group affect the social life of every student on campus.

QUESTION THREE:

Does new members initiation, done through blood Oath?

DECISION RULE:

Accept the question if the percentage of positive (YES) responses is greater/ higher than negative (NO) responses, otherwise reject the question.

With reference to table 4 in our data presentation.

Positive responses      =    65.21%

Negative Responses   =    34.78%

Therefore, the positive responses are greater/ higher than the negative responses.

DECISION: Accept the question because the positive responses in the table above, indicates that, new members initiation is done through blood Oath.

QUESTION FOUR:

Does Recruitment and Initiation of students on campuses have any negative implication?

DECISION RULE:

Accept the question, is the percentage of positive (YES) responses is higher than the negative (NO) response, otherwise reject the question. With reference to table 5 in our data presentation.

Positive responses      =    69.56%

Negative Responses   =    26.08%

Therefore, the positive responses are greater/ higher than the negative responses.

DECISION: Accept the question because the positive (YES) responses which is greater then the negative (NO) responses indicate that, Recruitment and Initiation of students on campuses have much negative implications.

QUESTION FIVE:

Does most of the initiated members of cult groups come from average and wealthy families in the society?

DECISION RULES:

Accept the question if the percentage, of the positive (YES) responses is higher/ greater than the negative (NO) responses, otherwise reject the question. With reference to table 6 in our Data presentation.

Positive Responses     =    56.52%

Negative Responses   =    43.47%

Therefore, the positive responses are greater/ higher than the negative responses.

DECISION:

Accept the question because the positive (YES) responses which is greater/ higher than the negative (NO) responses, indicate that most of the initiated members of cult groups come from average and wealthy families in the society.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

 SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The main focus of this research work is recruitment and initiation processes among cultist groups with a focus on three selected cultist groups in Ebonyi State University.

From the analysis of the research questions, the research was able to identify the day-to-day activities of the selected cultist groups in Ebonyi State University, their behaviour, inner workings, recruitment and initiation processes of the various groups afore mentioned, effects on their academic, social life etc, as well as proffering long lasting solutions to them.

Furthermore, the study revealed that recruitment and initiation of students on campuses have much negative implications like, the blood they use in their oath taking may be contaminated with one who has HIV Aids, death may arise of the new members in their process of recruitment and initiation because of how they are drilled (Igodo, 2003:21)

Finally, from the fore going, it is noted that, most of the initiated members of cultist groups come from average and wealthy families in the society because some of their parents have influence in the society, political affluence and influence where some of them are used as thugs during politics.

CONCLUSION

From the foregoing, the researcher is let to conclude that recruitment and initiation of students on Nigerian institution into cult groups have uncountable negative implications. From the test of research questions administered, conclusion is drawn also that, disadvantages endemic in cultism is higher than the advantages such that, it should be discouraged.

From the results of the analysis as shown in our chapter four of this work, the effects of campus cultists are tremendous, for instance students get butchered in mindless killings characteristic of cult clashes as guns, axes, knives, machetes, etc are freely used.

The study is led to conclude that, when good recommendations are not adopted to curb its insisant increase on campuses, it will destroy our educational system and when this happens; our economy is affect as well as having our image tarnished before the international nations.
